This alphabet series – designed for Pre-K to Grade One –supports children in developing connections between letters and sounds in a fun, creative manner. The reader joins the main characters – Alec and Zara – as they explore a magical, alphabet land. Each story invites the reader to celebrate the featured letter as they encounter new alphabet characters, objects, community helpers and zoo animals that just happen to star with that letter. What a fun way to learn about letters and their sounds while building a strong foundation for future reading development!
The Books
Each book follows the two main characters - Alec and Zara - as they discover a magic tablet and travel to a magic alphabet land. In this new land they meet two other children who teach Alec and Zara about their favourite letter and the beginning sound that it makes.
Each of the books follow a sequential, predictable pattern which includes visiting a “sound room” to discover objects that begin with the featured letter, as well as meeting community helpers and animals that - you guessed it - begin with their favourite letter! Alec and Zara also get a chance to practice printing the letters that they discover during each magical learning journey. Moreover, the illustrations support a recurring theme throughout the series that showcases the cycle of the seasons. This gives teachers and parents the opportunity to explain and reinforce the changing of the seasons as Alec and Zara make appropriate clothing choices to adapt to their environment.
Cross Curricular Learning
This adventure takes children through the seasons (science), reinforces early math skills like “more” or “less”, and gives opportunities to print letters (fine motor).
